How It Happened
Rhode Island manufactured two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win in walk-off fashion, beating Army 8-7 at the Bulls Invitational Sunday morning.
Trailing 7-6 heading to the bottom of the seventh,
Skyler Rapuano led off with an infield single and
Becca Zawistowski followed with a single up the middle.
Vicki Viaclovsky reached on a bunt single to load the bases, and
Leilyn Alvarez worked a walk to force Rapuano home and tie the score. After a fielder's choice got a force out at home,
Hannah Hernandez came to the plate and chopped a grounder toward second base. Viaclovski got a great break off third and beat the throw home and giving Rhode Island the victory.
The offense battled back several times late. Heading into the bottom of the fifth, Rhody trailed 4-1. A bases loaded walk by Rapuano drove in
Cassie Swenson, and a two-run single by Zawistowski tied the game. With runners on the corner, URI attempted a double steal. Pinch runner
Mandi Hanewich was out at second, but she drew the throw, allowing Rapuano to score from third for a 5-4 lead.
Army (5-10) got one back in the top of the sixth to tie the game, but Rhody came right back.
Casey Miller and Hernandez started the inning with back-to-back singles, and
Elena Gonzalez sacrificed both along.
Kylie Bulinski put URI back in front with an infield groundout that plated Miller.
Once again, the Black Knights responded, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh. However, Rhode Island would not be denied and the offense came through again with two runs to snap a four-game skid.
