RHODE ISLAND VS. LA SALLE - SERIES NOTES
- Tuesday's opening round game will be the third meeting this season between Rhode Island and La Salle.
- They have split the first two games, with La Salle winning in overtime, 77-75, on Jan. 7 and Rhode Island claiming a 72-70 victory on Jan. 28.
- Each of the last three games in the series have been decided by two points. URI won 56-54 on Jan. 19, 2022.
- This will be the fifth time URI and La Salle meet in the Atlantic 10 Championship.
- The Rams have won all four previous postseason meetings.
- The last time Rhode Island and La Salle played in the Atlantic 10 Championship was the second round of the 2019 tournament. The Rams won, 76-57.
- The other years were 1996 (first round, 85-59); 1999 (quarterfinals, 83-58) and 2004 (first round, 55-42).
- Since the teams met on Jan. 28, both experienced extended streaks. La Salle won five straight games after it lost to the Rams.However, the Explorers then went on to drop five in a row, including a 76-73 loss at home to Loyola Chicago in their regular season finale.
- Rhode Island - on the other hand - suffered a seven-game skid after it defeated La Salle.
- The Rams ended the streak with a 79-77 win at Loyola Chicago last Wednesday night.
- The winner of Tuesday's game will face No. 6 Duquesne in the second round on Wednesday. Game time will be 7:30 p.m. on the USA Network.
RHODE ISLAND AT THE ATLANTIC 10 CHAMPIONSHIP
- Rhode Island is 30-37 all time at the Atlantic 10 Championship.
- It has won the tournament twice, doing so in 1999 and 2017.
- The Rams have won at least one game in the tournament in four of its last five appearances.
- Last year, Rhody held off Duquesne 79-77 in the opening round before falling to Richmond 64-59.
- Rhode Island is the No. 14 seed this year, the lowest the Rams have ever been seeded.
- Over its last five appearances at the championship, URI has an 8-4 record.
- The team went 3-0 in 2017, 2-1 in 2018, 2-1 in 2019, 0-1 in 2021 and 1-1 a year ago.
- The tournament was called off in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a year the Rams were the No. 3 seed.
- The Rams have played in the A-10 finals five times and the semifinals 15 times overall.
- Since the tournament began in 1981, URI has dropped its first game 20 times, and it did not qualify twice (2012, 2013).
