Late Scoring Lifts Baseball Past Brown

How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball's offense exploded over the final three innings of a Tuesday afternoon game at Brown, scoring eight runs to secure a 12-5 midweek win.

Rhody (12-16, 3-3 Atlantic 10) turned in 10 hits, marking its 12th outing of the season with 10-or-more. Michael Anderson (three) and Anthony DePino (two) both had multi-hit games, though the Rams had contributors up and down the lineup.

The Bears (7-18, 4-5 Ivy League) were first to strike at their home field, going up 1-0 in the bottom of the first with a solo home run. In the following frame, DePino answered with his sixth big fly of the season to knot up the score and tie Mark Coley for the team lead.

After two quiet innings, the Rams struck again in the top of the fifth. Addison Kopack recorded an RBI triple to give the team its first advantage before Anderson's RBI double and a Bear error allowed two more runs to come in, putting Rhode Island up 4-1. Brown almost got back on top in the bottom of the frame when a two-RBI homer cut its deficit down to one, but Jeremy Urena was called from the bullpen and recorded a backwards K to strand three Bears on base.

Up 4-3, Rhode Island continued to pad its lead down the stretch. A pair of bases-loaded walks issued to Rob Butler and Calvin McCall extended the difference to 6-3 before a six-spot in the eighth put the game out of reach. Butler was the one to deliver the final blow, as his three-RBI home run lifted the team to a 12-3 edge.

Brown did use a single to sneak two runs across in the bottom of the eighth, putting the score at 12-5 Rhode Island, but the team was unable to overtake the Rams.

Inside the Box Score
  • Redshirt sophomore Rob Butler's home run was his third of the season and helped him to collect a team-best four RBI.

  • Freshman Michael Anderson cranked out a pair of doubles and scored three runs.
  • Redshirt junior Addison Kopack tallied his first triple of the year.
  • Redshirt junior Calvin McCall had an outstanding game defensively in center field and made a highlight-worthy grab in the top of the seventh.
  • Six different arms made appearances for the Rams.
  • Redshirt junior Broc French, freshman Jeremy Urena and freshman Connor Grotyohann held the Bears scoreless in their respective relief appearances.
  • French was credited with the win, his first of the season.
