Ramirez Homer Helps Rams Defeat Bonnies in Extras

How it Happened
A 10th-inning home run off the bat of Alex Ramirez boosted the Rhode Island baseball team to a 5-4 victory over St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon at Handler Park. The Rams (15-16, 5-3 Atlantic 10) picked up their second-straight conference series victory with the result, having defeated the Bonnies 9-6 in Friday's opener.

After giving up its lead in the bottom of the eighth, Rhody made a late-game push to overtake St. Bonaventure (5-24, 2-6 A-10). The rally began when Billy Butler (single) and Anthony DePino (walk) got on base in the top of the ninth while the team was facing a 4-3 deficit. Calvin McCall, who pinch ran for Butler, later turned on the jets to beat out a play at the plate and score on a Rob Butler single, knotting the score up at 4-4.

In the bottom half of the frame, Jon Morrison sent the game to extras by retiring all three Bonnies he faced, recording the final out on strikes. Morrison's goose egg set the stage for Ramirez, who deposited a ball in center field to put the Rams on top.

Ryan Andrade was called upon to close things out and worked around a one-out walk thanks to a double play that ended the game, sealing the win.

There were two separate ties and a handful of lead changes before Rhode Island made its game-winning push.

Inside the Box Score
  • Graduate student Jon Morrison picked up the win in relief, moving his season record to 1-1. He faced one over the minimum in his 2.0 innings out of the bullpen.
  • Sophomore Ryan Andrade earned his fifth save of the year, making him the first Ram to reach the milestone since Tyler Brosius did so in 2019. Brosius finished that campaign with six.
  • Redshirt sophomore Rob Butler paced the offense, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. His only out of the day was a hard one at second.
  • Each of URI's five runs were scored by a different player, signifying a well-balance attack.
  • Sophomore Anthony DePino's seventh-inning solo shot was his second home run in as many days. He now has a team-best eight on the year.
  • Redshirt junior Addison Kopack extended his on-base streak to 23 games an has hit safely in eight straight.
  • Starter Trystan Levesque left the game with a non-decision after pitching 7.0 frames. He was tagged with four earned runs and struck out two.
