Baseball Sweeps St. Bonaventure

How it Happened
The Rhode Island baseball team defeated St. Bonaventure 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at Handler Park, securing a three-game Atlantic 10 sweep. This is the first conference sweep for the Rams (16-16, 6-3 A-10) since doing so on the road at Massachusetts in 2021 and URI's first over the Bonnies (5-25, 2-7 A-10) since 2016.

Rhody never trailed in the series finale, scoring first in the opening frame when Billy Butler's double plated a pair of runs. Though the home team answered in its half with an RBI double of its own, the one-run difference was the closest it got.

Over the next two innings, Rhode Island padded its advantage with three more scores. Alex Ramirez' second-inning RBI single added to the total before a double off the bat of Anthony DePino and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Calvin McCall pushed the score to 5-1 in the third.

After giving up the early run, Braeden Perry settled in on the mound and held the Bonnies scoreless for five innings, retiring six-straight batters at one point during the stretch. The rookie recorded four strikeouts while scattering as many hits in his second quality start in two weekends.

Rhode Island continued to attack down the stretch, scoring three more times to grab its eight-run total. Ramirez (single), DePino (single) and Connor Grotyohann (sac fly) were all credited with RBI late in the game.

Inside the Box Score
  • The three-game sweep of the Bonnies shot Rhode Island up in the league standings, as the team now checks in at third behind Saint Louis (22-11, 8-1 A-10) and Davidson (21-13, 7-2 A-10).
  • Sophomore Eric Genther scored a game-high three runs and accounted for the team's only stolen base of the day.
  • Redshirt senior Billy Butler cranked out two doubles.
  • Both Brandon Hsu and Jeremy Urena were scoreless in their relief appearances for Rhode Island. Hsu tossed two innings, while Urena had the ball for the bottom of the ninth.
  • Five different Rams finished the game with two hits.
  • With the result, Perry improved his season record to 3-3.
  • Though he was held hitless, redshirt junior Addison Kopack improved his streak of getting on base to 24 games.
