How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball lost a 12-6 game to UMass Lowell on Wednesday afternoon at Bill Beck Field, failing to lead the RiverHawks at any point in the contest.Â
The visitors took their initial advantage early, putting up five unanswered runs over the opening two frames. UMass Lowell (12-22, 5-7 America East) continued to score through the middle of the game, pushing the difference to 8-0 before the Rams (16-17, 6-3 Atlantic 10) ended the shutout in the bottom of the seventh. Calvin McCall, who reached on a two-out walk, was first to score thanks to a RiverHawk error. A bases-loaded hit by pitch and a two-RBI single from Eric Genther then lowered the deficit to 8-4.Â
A double allowed UMass Lowell to get two of the runs back in the top of the eighth before two more RiverHawks snuck across on a Rhody error in the ninth, re-extending the lead to 12-4. Rhode Island made things interesting in the bottom of the frame by loading up the bases with no outs and did manage to plate two scores, but the visitors held on for the win.
