How it Happened
Rhode Island fell to No. 10 Connecticut in its Tuesday evening tilt at Dunkin' Donuts Park, dropping a 9-0 result to the Huskies. The home team scored at both the beginning and end of the ballgame to put a win out of reach for the Rams (17-20, 7-5 Atlantic 10).
UConn (30-11, 6-3 Big East) got going early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first before adding an additional three runs over the next two frames. Though Rhode Island pushed runners into scoring position in each of those innings, and even loaded up the bases in the fourth, the team was unable to score.
After giving up a run in his first inning, reliever Brandon Hsu settled in and held Connecticut to its first zero of the night in the fourth. Broc French then kept the momentum going for a pair of scoreless innings before Jon Morrison retired the side on strikes in the seventh.
Though the bullpen was able to hold the Huskies to four-straight zeros, the team struck again in the eighth when a ground-rule double allowed a pair of runs to score. Ryan Andrade was not tagged with either of the tallies, which were the final two of the night.
