Baseball Walked Off at Saint Joseph’s

How it Happened
An error in the 10th inning caused the Rhode Island baseball team to lose a 6-5 ballgame in the series finale with Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at Smithson Field.

With two runners on and no outs recorded, the Rams (20-27, 10-11 Atlantic 10) had opted to move freshman Michael Anderson from first base onto the mound. Anderson, who caused a batter to foul out and took one down swinging, was one out away from sending the contest to the 11th when the error was committed.

The game had a slower start than the two meetings prior, as the score was knotted up at just 2-2 by the end of the fifth inning. Addison Kopack's sac fly in the second and an error in the fifth had allowed Rhody to plate its two runs in the spread, while a bases-loaded walk and a solo shot did damage for the Hawks (25-20, 15-6 A-10).

Rhode Island had a chance to break the tie in the sixth when Eric Genther, who was hit by a pitch, advanced to third but he was left on base. In the home team's half, a URI miscue allowed Saint Joseph's to take a 3-2 lead.

After knocking on the door for a few frames, Rhode Island finally got back on top in the seventh when Billy Butler left the yard. His home run pushed Anderson and Alex Ramirez across to lift the Rams to a 5-3 edge. Though Saint Joseph's got one of the runs back in the bottom half, Ryan Andrade worked his way out of the jam and stranded two Hawks to preserve the advantage at 5-4.

Unfortunately, the Rhody lead did not last for long as an RBI double for the Hawks forced the game into extras, where the team eventually took a 6-5 victory by scoring the two-out unearned run. Genther had reached for the Rams as the go-ahead run in the top-half of the inning, but the rest of the lineup was unable to bring him in.

Inside the Box Score
  • Freshman Braeden Perry and sophomore Ryan Andrade split the first nine innings of the game evenly. Both arms struck out four batters and were tagged with two earned runs apiece.
  • Redshirt senior Billy Butler (home run), redshirt junior Addison Kopack (double) and sophomore Anthony DePino (double) accounted for URI's three extra-base hits.
  • Redshirt freshman Brandon Hsu was hit with the loss, moving his season record to 0-1.
  • Both freshman Michael Anderson (2-for-5) and sophomore Eric Genther (2-for-4) recorded multi-hit games.
  • Each of Rhody's five runs were scored by a different player.
  • With Butler's solo shot, the team has now homered in six of its past seven games.
