Game Recap: Football |

No. 21/20 Rhody Pounds Maine, 34-17

How It Happened
No. 21/20 Rhode Island recorded it first win at Maine in 25 years, using its versatile and explosive offense to pull away from the Black Bears, 34-17 Friday night.

The Rams (2-1, 2-0 CAA Football) scored twice through the air, twice on the ground and had two field goals on the night. Wide receiver Kahtero Summers caught a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to spark the offense.

Maine (0-3, 0-1 CAA Football) opened the scoring with a touchdown drive on its opening possession. The 12-play, 75-yard drive ate the first 6:45 of the game before Tristan Kenan punched it in from the 2-yard line. Rhody responded with a 47-yard field goal from Ty Groff on the next drive.

The Rams took the lead early in the second quarter when Kasim Hill hit Summers for a 35-yard touchdown. Less than four minutes later, Kenan scored again on a 15-yard rush, putting the Black Bears up, 14-10.

URI scored 14 unanswered points. First Hill and Summers connected again, this time on a 37-yard scoring strike. Ja'Den McKenzie followed with a 17-yard rumble up the middle, helping Rhody take a 24-14 lead. Maine ended the half with a field goal to make it a one-possession game at the break.

The second half was all Rhode Island, as the defense held Maine scoreless. A Groff field goal and a Gabe Sloat rushing touchdown put the game in hand as Rhode Island cruised to its second straight conference win.

Inside the Box Score
  • The win snapped a 10-game road losing streak at Maine. Rhode Island's last victory at Orono was during the 1998 season.
  • Wide receiver Kahtero Summers caught six passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns. It was his second straight 100-yard receiving game, and the touchdowns were his first two of the season.
  • Through three games, Summers has 16 catches for 332 yards. He has had at least 99 receiving yards in each game.
  • Five different receivers have caught touchdown pass for the Rams this season.
  • Quarterback Kasim Hill was 18-of-32 for 234 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
  • Hill became the third URI player to reach 6,000 career passing yards, joining Chris Hixson (8,407 from 1993-96) and Tom Ehrhardt (8,378 from 1984-85).
  • Running back Ja'Den McKenzie topped 100 rushing yards, punishing the Maine defense for 121 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries.
  • The Rams ran for 206 yards overall, averaging 4.9 yards per carry.
  • Safeties Jordan Colbert and Brent Jackson led Rhode Island nine tackles each.
  • URI's defense held Maine to 3-of-11 on third down.
  • Linebacker A.J. Pena had 1.5 sacks. He had a solo effort in the first half and later combined with defensive lineman Jalen Brown on another. Pena has 2.5 sacks through three games.
  • Cornerback Fredrick Mallay recorded an interception.
  • Cornerback Randy Jordan had two of Rhode Island's four pass break ups. Linebacker Gabe Salomons and safety Seun Filaoye had the others.
  • Kicker Ty Groff's 47-yard field goal was the first of his career. It also was the longest for URI in 10 years, matching Dylan Smith's 47-yarder against Richmond in 2013. Groff is tied for the seventh-longest field goal in program history.
  • Groff added a 42-yard field goal in the third quarter and was a perfect 4-for-4 on extra points.
  • Punt returner Gabe Sloat had three returns for 57 yards, including a career-long 41 yarder.
  • Quarterback Kasim Hill was the game captain, and safety Jordan Colbert was the anchor bearer.
  • The game was changed to Friday night due to the expectance of Hurricane Lee hitting the Orono area Saturday.
