PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior
Nikki Fernando grabbed her second singles win of the weekend, providing Rhode Island its lone victory Sunday on the final day of the Bruno Classic at Brown.
Playing against Connecticut's Isabel Petri Bere, Fernando took care of business in straight sets. She won 6-2, 6-0 for her team-leding fifth singles win of the Fall.
Freshman
Katharina Spieth nearly gave the Rams a second win. She battled through three sets against UConn's Maria Constantinou before falling 4-6, 6-4, 10-5.
"We got better this weekend by playing high-level matches against high-level teams," Rhode Island head coach
Jonas Brobeck said. "We are showing signs of being a very good team, but need to clean some things up in doubles, and compete smarter in important part of matches in singles."
Rhode Island will compete in two events next week to close out the Fall portion of the season. Some team members will compete at the Atlantic 10 Individual Championship, hosted by Davidson. Others will be at home, participating in the URI Fall Invite at the URI Tennis Complex.
