DAVIDSON, N.C. – Freshman Katharina Spieth won a pair of matches on the opening day of the Atlantic 10 Masters Qualifier Friday. With her performance, Spieth advanced to the quarterfinals of the inaugural Fall tournament for the conference.

Spieth faced St. Bonaventure's Isabella Venter in the opening round and recorded a straight-set win. Spieth took the match 6-3, 6-3 to move on to the Round of 16.

In the afternoon, Spieth faced Mariana Campino from Massachusetts. Campino received an opening round bye, but it was Spieth pulling off the upset. She again won in straight sets, knocking Campino off by a 6-4, 6-4 score.

Spieth will face Davidson's Ellie Hammond in the quarterfinal round on Saturday.

Rhody was also represented by Sophie Herrman in the singles draw, as well as Spieth and Nikki Fernando in the doubles draw.

Herrman started strong, rolling past St. Bonaventure's Tamara Bachmann in the opening round. Herrman won 6-2, 6-0 to set up a match against UMass' Thamonpan Jonglertakul in the Round of 16. Jonglertakul was victorious, 6-1, 6-2.

In doubles play, Spieth and Fernando battled VCU's Mariam Ibrahim Mohamed Metwally and Jewelwics. The VCU tandem managed the win, 8-6.

Herrman and Fernando will both compete in the singles consolation draw Saturday morning. Fernando and Spieth will play again in the doubles consolation draw as well.

"We had a good first day at the inaugural A-10 Conference Masters," URI head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "Nikki and Katha did not get the result they wanted in doubles but showed growth in areas we have been working on.

"We saw solid first rounds for Sophie and Katha in singles, and we are excited for new opportunities to get better tomorrow and for Katha's quarterfinal in singles."
