DAVIDSON, N.C. – Rhode Island freshman
Katharina Spieth's impressive run at the Atlantic 10 Masters Qualifier ended in the semifinals Saturday.
Spieth picked up her third win of the weekend when she defeated Davidson's Ellie Hammond 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinal round. It was her third straight-set victory in as many matches.
In the semifinals, Spieth faced Sofia Maria Barbulescu in a matchup of two of the best freshmen in the conference. Spieth took the opening set in a tiebreaker, winning 7-6 (7-1). However, Barbulescu battled back and took the next two sets 6-4, 6-3.
In doubles play, Spieth and
Nikki Fernando competed in the consolation draw. They played a competitive match against Ella Faessler and Amelia Tye from Massachusetts, but URI ultimately fell, 8-6.
"I am proud of the efforts today by the Rams," Rhode Island head coach
Jonas Brobeck said. "Katharina battled very hard and fell in the semifinals against a very good player. When we compete like that and trust in our abilities and game-plan, we will be hard to beat in the Spring."
