RHODE ISLAND VS. MONMOUTH - SERIES NOTES

  • The Rams and the Hawks will play one another for just the fourth time in the programs' shared history on Saturday at Meade Stadium.
  • The series between the teams dates back to 2008. Since then, Rhode Island has earned a 2-1 advantage with wins split between Kingston and West Long Branch.
  • Rhody's last game against Monmouth was one for the books, as the 48-46 URI win took seven overtimes to complete (Oct. 22, 2022).
  • It was the longest game ever between two FCS programs, as well as the longest game in CAA Football history.
  • The victory, the 50th of head coach Jim Fleming's career, saw former running back Marques DeShields accrue four touchdowns and 256-all purpose yards.
  • Despite the Rams leading the all-time series, Monmouth has a 111-81 scoring advantage.
  • The Hawks bring a winning road record to Kingston at 2-1, while the Rams are a perfect 4-0 within the friendly confines of Meade Stadium.
  • Monmouth has two of the best offensive players of the nation in quarterback Derek Robertson and running back Sone Ntoh.
  • Robertson is first in the country in passing yards per game (322.4) and eighth in points responsible for (128), while Ntoh leads FCS Football with 18 rushing touchdowns.
  • As a team, Rhode Island has rushed for 16 touchdowns.

FAMILY WEEKEND

  • Rhody will be celebrating Family Weekend on Saturday, Nov. 2, with members of the campus community welcoming their loved ones to Kingston.
  • As a result, the game against Monmouth was sold out weeks in advance.
  • URI Football has sold out three other games this season, attracting more than 20,000 fans to Meade Stadium.

UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY

  • With the win against Maine, Rhode Island secured its fifth straight winning season with four more regular-season games remaining.
  • This is the first time that the team has strung together five winning seasons. The program previously put together four from 1982-85.
  • URI is off to its best start in conference play since it began the 2001 season 5-0 in the Atlantic 10. The program finished that season 8-3.
  • Since 1895, Rhode Island has reached seven wins in just nine seasons.
  • Three of those campaigns have happened under head coach Jim Fleming, who led the Rams to back-to-back 7-4 seasons in 2021 and 2022.
  • Rhody's record for season victories is 10, which it achieved in both 1984 (10-3) and 1985 (10-3).
  • The 1985 squad was also the last to make the playoffs.
  • Should Rhode Island reach the eight-win mark against Monmouth, it will be the first time that the team has done so since 2001 (8-3).

PUTTING ON THE PRESSURE

  • The Rhode Island defense is seventh in the country with 59 tackles for loss.
  • As a unit, Rhody has caused opposing teams to lose 200 yards.
  • Last time out, five different players contributed to a season-high six sacks during the win against Maine.
  • Defensive lineman Carson Primrose led the charge, getting to the Black Bears' quarterback twice for a loss of 17 yards.
  • Linebacker A.J. Pena heads the team with 12.0 TFLs (67 yards), which are the second-most in the league and seventh in FCS Football.
  • The Rhody defense has come up with four or more sacks in three different games this season, tallying 10+ TFLs twice.
  • On the flip side, Rhody has given up 39 TFLs for 127 yards and has not allowed a sack since the game at Hampton back on Oct. 5.
