KINGSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island basketball legends Steve Chubin and Dayna Smith will be inducted into the URI Ring of Honor during the men's basketball game against the College of Charleston on Sunday, Nov. 24.

Chubin and Smith will be on hand for Sunday's men's game against College of Charleston. A special ceremony will be held to unveil banners honoring Chubin and Smith during the game.
"The Ring of Honor is the highest honor we can bestow on our athletics alumni," Rhode Island Director of Athletics Thorr Bjorn said. "Steve Chubin and Dayna Smith go hand-in-hand with Rhode Island basketball. Their respective impacts on the men's and women's programs simply can not be overstated, and it is with great pride that we welcome them home as the newest members of our Ring of Honor."
Still the eighth-leading scorer in men's basketball history at URI, Chubin scored 1,751 points during his career. His 659 points scored in the 1965-66 season were a program record until Sly Williams had 693 points in 1978-79.
Chubin averaged 21.8 points per game over the course of his career, and his 569 career free throws and 205 free throws made in 1965-66 both remain program records nearly 60 years after the fact. He led Rhode Island in scoring in each of his three seasons, helping the Rams to a 54-27 record with an NCAA tournament appearance in 1965-66.
In addition to his time in Kingston, Chubin won a gold medal with Team USA at the 1965 Maccabiah Games in Israel. The 23rd overall pick of the 1966 NBA draft, he chose to play for the Olimpia Milano of the FIBA Europeans Cup, where he was the leading scorer of the EuroLeague Finals.
He returned stateside and played in the ABA for several years, averaging 18.2 points and 4.7 assists per game as a rookie with the Anaheim Amigos in 1967-68. Chubin played more than 225 games overall in the ABA.

The greatest point guard in Rhode Island women's basketball history, Smith scored 1,174 points and dished out a program-record 793 assists from 1992-96.
When her playing career ended, Smith was one of 11 female players in history to record more than 1,000 points and 750 assists.
Smith graduated as URI's all-time leader in 3-point baskets with 184, a number that still ranks third in team history. She still is the program's all-time leader in assists with 793, a mark that is an unfathomable 423 more than the person in second place. Smith owns the top three single-season assist marks, all of which are at least 60 assists more than the closest total.
Still second in career steals in URI history with 351, Smith led Rhody to the first two 20-win seasons in program history. As a senior, she helped Rhode Island win a then-record 21 wins and URI's first appearance in the NCAA tournament during the 1995-96 season.
Following her playing career, Smith entered the coaching world. She spent 22 seasons as the head coach at Cornell, winning a program-record 224 games there. She led the team to its first Ivy League title and NCAA tournament appearance.
Chubin and Smith become the ninth and 10th members of the Ring of Honor. Ernie Calverly and Michele Washington were automatically inducted as the only players with retired numbers. Tom Garrick, Kenny Green and Carlton "Silk" Owens were inducted in 2022-23, while Cuttino Mobley, Antonio Reynolds Dean and Tyson Wheeler were officially entered in 2023-24.
