Both teams traded runs to start the game after Virginia Tech opened it up with an RBI single in the first.
Scott Penney plated the tying run in the following frame with a double that drove in
Anthony DePino, but the Hokies got two back right away with a solo shot and a double.
DJ Perron brought Rhody within one when he recorded his first home run as a Ram in the top of the third, but the 3-2 deficit was the closest the team got. Virginia Tech added a trio of insurance runs in the seventh before punctuating its scoring with a solo home run in the eighth.
