How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball was unable to prevent the sweep in its series at Virginia Tech, dropping a 14-2 result in the third and final game in Blacksburg on Sunday afternoon. 

The Rams (1-5) struggled to string much together, rattling off six hits, and committed three errors defensively while the Hokies (5-2) used a pair of crooked numbers to break away for their victory. 

Virginia Tech first struck in the bottom of the third, bringing in four two-out runs to take the lead. Two frames later, the team added nine more to its total in an inning that saw three different Rhody pitchers before adding a final score in the bottom of the eighth. 

Down 13-0, Rhode Island added both of its runs in the top of the seventh on doubles from Eric Genther and Brody Levin

Inside the Box Score
  • Both juniors Anthony DePino and Eric Genther had a multi-hit game, each finishing the day 2-for-3. Genther additionally scored a run and collected an RBI while DePino stole the team's first bag of the year.
  • Junior Brody Levin and redshirt freshman Will Hindle had a hit apiece. 
  • Sophomore Ryan King, who entered the game as a pinch runner, scored URI's other run. He stayed in the game at third base. 
  • Sophomore Connor Grotyohann (0-1) was tagged with the loss. He threw 4.0 innings in his start and struck out four batters.
  • Graduate student Zach Fernandez was on the hook for three earned runs in his 0.2-inning appearance. He recorded one punchout and let up seven hits. 
  • Freshman Josh Kopetski pitched a scoreless inning in relief and recorded his first collegiate strikeout.
