How It Happened
A wild surge in the final minutes came up just short for Rhode Island as the Rams fell at Saint Joseph's 72-67 Saturday afternoon.
Rhody (17-12, 9-7 Atlantic 10) trailed by 12 points when
Dee Dee Davis hit a 3-pointer to get the deficit to nine with 3:47 to go. Another Davis 3-pointer followed by a Davis steal and
Anaelle Dutat layup got URI to within four points at 66-62.
Dutat and
Ines Debroise each went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to make it a one possession game, 66-64, with 1:20 to go. Yet another Davis 3-pointer trimmed the Saint Joseph's lead to one at 68-67 with 17.2 seconds to go.
After a pair of free throws by Talya Bruger made it a three-point game, Rhode Island had a chance to tie. However, the Hawks forced a tough 3-point attempt that was well off the mark, essentially ending the game
Saint Joseph's Paula Maurina scored 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting from the floor and 7-of-7 at the line. Paired with 17 from Brugler, it provided just enough scoring for Saint Joseph's to hold off Rhode Island for the second time this season.
