How it Happened
Rhode Island Women's Basketball trailed for the entirety of its senior night game against VCU on Wednesday at The Ryan Center, falling 69-59.
Rhody (17-13, 9-8 Atlantic 10) made a push in the final 10 minutes, outscoring the visiting Rams (25-4, 14-3 A-10) 20-12 to cut the deficit down to its final 10-point margin but it was the closest that they were able to get.Â
URI turned the ball over three times out of the gate, allowing VCU to jump out. Despite the struggle to find any offensive rhythm, the team was only down by six (16-10) at the end of the first quarter.
Dee Dee Davis and
Mayé Touré accounted for all 10 of Rhode Island's points in that spread.Â
The Rams used free throw shooting to stay in it in the second quarter, as
Anaelle Dutat hit a pair of shots to bring the team within four at 20-16 with six minutes to go but were otherwise cold shooting-wise, going over three minutes without a field goal. VCU led 39-25 at the break.
Turnovers and scoring droughts continued to affect the home team in the second half, as the visiting Rams eventually stretched their lead to as much as 20. Rhode Island chipped away in the fourth quarter and got within 10 when
Teisha Hyman hit a jumpshot with a little over two minutes to go but the Rams were unable to pull off the comeback.Â
