How it Happened
Rhode Island was unable to slow down a balanced and efficient Richmond offense, falling to the Spiders 68-49 Wednesday night.
Siobhan Ryan had 14 points to lead three Richmond players in double digits. Maggie Doogam added 12 and Addie Budnik had 10. Katie Hill, Grace Townsend and Racheel Ullstrom all added nine points each.
Richmond (20-4, 10-1 Atlantic 10) used its perimeter shooting to build a big lead early. The Spiders scored the first nine points of the game and opened on a 12-2 run overall, with all the points coming on 3-point baskets. On each of the four possessions that led to 3-point baskets, the Spiders used five passes or less to create open looks, as their quick-strike offense had URI on its heels. Budnik hit a pair from long range while Doogan and Katie Hill each had one, forcing Rhode Island to call a timeout just 3:32 into the contest. Richmond led 22-7 by the end of the opening quarter, largely on the strength of 6-of-8 shooting from the arc.
Rhody (15-10, 7-5 A-10) surged back at the start of the second quarter, scoring the first nine points of the period.
Dee Dee Davis had five points during the run, getting Rhody back within 22-16. However, Richmond responded with an 8-0 run of its own to push the lead back to 30-16. Played evened out a bit from there, with Rhode Island managing to cut the deficit to 11 at 34-23 by the break.
The visiting Spiders put the game away in the third quarter, using an efficient offense. Richmond shot 5-of-8 from the floor and a perfect 8-for-8 at the free throw line to outscore Rhody 20-11 in the period. Down 20 going into the final quarter, the Rams were never able to challenge the outcome from there.
