How it Happened
Evan Maloney was dominant on the mound as Rhode Island snapped a four-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over Northeastern in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday.
Rhode Island (3-11) scored in each of the first four innings as it steadily built a 5-0 lead for Maloney after four innings.
Penney scored the first run on a run-scoring groundout by
Eric Genther.
Brody McKenzie executed a squeeze play to bring
Jack Hopko home in the second, and Nick Toro later scored on a passed ball.
An inning later, Toro delivered a two-out, RBI single to drive in Genther. In the fourth, it was Genther's turn to come through, as his two-out single drove in Penney.
The run support allowed Maloney to settle in. He did not allow any runs until the top of the sixth, when the Huskies (11-5) broke through for a single run. That was all the damage the visitors could muster against Maloney (1-1), who allowed just one run on four hits over seven complete innings.
