How it Happened
A pair of two-run innings and a stellar pitching performance allowed Rhode Island Baseball to defeat UConn 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.

Rhode Island (4-12) used four arms to limit the visiting Huskies to just two hits in the team's first midweek game of the season.

Offensively, the Rams used the long ball to earn the lead as both Michael Anderson and Anthony DePino took UConn (7-11) pitchers deep. Anderson's solo shot came in the fourth inning, in response to an RBI groundout that awarded the visitors the lead in the top half. Nick Toro then made it a 2-1 URI advantage when he skied a sac fly out to center field that drove in DJ Perron.

DePino's bomb was driven out to left center in the bottom of the sixth, opposite the Huskies' first reliever. His sixth home run of the year scooped up Anderson, who had drawn a full-count walk, and propelled the team to its final 4-1 advantage.

Inside the Box Score
  • Redshirt junior Brandon Hsu scattered two hits in his 4.0-inning start and let up just one run. He plunked a pair of batters but issued zero walks and earned his first win of the year (1-1).
  • Junior Kenny Heon was credited with his first save as a Ram, recording all three outs on strikes in the ninth.
  • It was the Rams' fifth multi-home run game of the year.
  • Freshman Reece Moroney and graduate student DJ Perron contributed a hit apiece.
  • Sophomore Connor Grotyohann faced one over the minimum in his 2.0 scoreless frames of relief and struck out the final batter he faced.
  • The two hits given up by the pitching staff are the lowest for the team this year. Rhode Island had let up five at Texas A&M (March 9) and opposite Northeastern (March 16).
  • Sophomore Jeremy Urena retired all six Huskies he faced across the sixth and seventh innings.
  • Rhode Island's bullpen did not allow any hits over the final five frames.
  • Head coach Raphael Cerrato (219-237-2) is closing in on third all-time on URI's list of winningest coaches. He now needs four more victories to surpass Frank Keaney (222; 1921-48).
Up Next
The Rams will continue their midweek action with a game against Stonehill on Wednesday, March 20. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Bill Beck Field.
