How it Happened
Michael Anderson had a day for the ages, driving in a program-record 12 runs to lead Rhode Island to a 19-15Â victory over Stonehill Wednesday afternoon.
Anderson slugged two home runs – a three-run shot and a grand slam – to go with a two-run triple, two-run double and an RBI double. The 12 RBI was the most by a player in NCAA Division I this season.Â
Visiting Stonehill (4-9) scored twice in the top of the first inning, and the score stayed that way until Rhody (5-12) broke through for three runs in the bottom of the third.
Reece Moroney had an RBI single and Anderson delivered his first hit of the day, a two-run double that gave the Rams the lead, 3-2.
An inning later, Anderson hit a two-run triple to right field that extended the lead to 5-2. He later came in on a run-scoring double by
Anthony DePino.
The Skyhawks made things interesting with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but Anderson came up big for the third consecutive inning when he drilled a three-run shot to right that made the score 10-4. It was the second home run in as many days for Anderson.
Once again, Stonehill chipped away with three in the top of the seventh to pull within 10-7. However, Rhode Island exploded for seven more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Anderson delivered the big blow with a grand slam to left field.
Jack Hopko added a two-run double, and the Rams pushed the lead to double digits at 17-7.
Anderson later added an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to finally cap his historic day. That hit put Rhode Island ahead 19-9, and the team managed to hold on over the final two innings, though Stonehill did score six times in the top of the ninth.
