How it Happened
Rhode Island was walked off 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth in the series opener at Saint Louis on Thursday afternoon.

The Rams (5-14, 0-1 Atlantic 10), who had led 2-1 in the top of the seventh, were dealt the final blow when the Billikens' Patrick Clohisy delivered an RBI single to end the game.

Rhode Island had the lead two separate times in the contest, first doing so in the opening frame when Michael Anderson homered to left field. Though Saint Louis (17-6, 1-0 A-10) brought in an unearned run in response, starters Evan Maloney and Jackson Holmes put up five-straight zeros apiece to keep the game tied at 1-1.

Jack Hopko broke the tie in the top of the seventh when his double allowed Scott Penney, who had singled, to come home. Pinch runner Ryan Henschel was 90 feet away from adding an insurance run for URI but was ultimately stranded at third base. In the home team's half of the inning, a two-out RBI single tied the score up once again at 2-2.

Rhody was in position to score in the top of the eighth when Anderson and Anthony DePino drew back-to-back walks to lead off but both were left on the base paths. SLU went on to secure the win with its ninth-inning hit.

Inside the Box Score
  • Graduate student Zach Fernandez (0-1) was tagged with the loss. He relieved junior Kenny Heon to start the ninth.

  • Each of URI's six hits came from a different player. Sophomores Michael Anderson (home run) and Jack Hopko (double) accounted for the team's extra-base hits.
  • Sophomore Nick Toro threw out a runner from behind the dish.
  • Rhode Island hit just .091 (1-for-11) with runners in scoring position.
