How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball held off Quinnipiac, 14-13, for a midweek win on Wednesday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
There were six lead changes, 22 total hits and four combined errors in the second meeting between Rhody (9-20) and the Bobcats this season.
Quinnipiac (9-17) first struck in the top of the second with an RBI groundout but
Anthony DePino answered right away with a three-run blast out to left field.
A
Michael Borrelli bomb in the fourth pushed the lead to 4-1 before a six-spot in the fifth awarded Quinnipiac a 7-4 edge. The Rams threw three different pitchers in the inning, two of whom were charged with runs. Rhode Island got five back in its half of the frame, thanks to a two-RBI single from
DJ Perron, an error and a sac fly off the bat of Borrelli.
The score continued to climb in the sixth, which Quinnipiac began by plating four runs. A sac fly, a pair of RBI singles and a bases-loaded walk flipped the advantage back in favor of the visitors at 11-9 before Perron and
Scott Penney tied things back up at 11-apiece with a double and a single, respectively.
After putting up 10 runs in two innings, the Bobcats were held scoreless in the seventh by
Connor Grotyohann. The Rams took advantage of the zero and went ahead again at 14-11 with an RBI single from DePino and a two-run double by
Eric Genther.
Quinnipiac threatened to flip the score once again in the eighth by leading off the frame with three straight walks but
Zach Fernandez was called from the bullpen and limited the damage to just one run. He then worked around a baserunner in the ninth and ended the game with a swinging strikeout to preserve the win.

- Graduate student Michael Borrelli's home run was his first at URI. The Saint Anselm transfer scored a game-high three runs.
