How it Happened
A five-run push by the opposition in the middle of the game caused Rhode Island Baseball to drop its series finale at George Washington, 7-4.
With the Sunday afternoon win, the series went to the Revolutionaries (23-16, 6-6 A-10). George Washington had won the first meeting 11-6 before Rhody (12-21, 5-7 A-10) forced the rubber match with a 14-6 result on Saturday.
URI had the lead early in the game, going up 3-2 by the end of the second inning. An RBI single from
DJ Perron got things going in the opening frame before a
Connor Grotyohann homer and a run-scoring double from
Anthony DePino pushed the advantage. The Revolutionaries' runs in the spread came on a pair of base hits.
Starting arm
Connor Johnston then posted a pair of zeros to preserve the edge before getting into trouble in the fifth when he issued two walks. Three different pitchers came out of the bullpen in the inning, which saw three runs scored.
Though Grotyohann plated Perron with a single in the top of the sixth to bring the deficit down to one, it was the closest that URI got. Another two walks drawn by GW in its half came back to haunt the Rams when a triple cleared the bases and pushed the home team's lead to 7-4.
Rhode Island left four runners stranded down the stretch, ending the game with the bases loaded.
