How it Happened
A two-out, two-run double off the bat of
Will Hindle and a solid performance from closer
Tommy Hughes allowed the Rhode Island Baseball team to secure a 5-3 victory over UMass on Sunday afternoon at Bill Beck Field.
With the result, the Rams (7-17, 2-4 Atlantic 10) won the weekend series. Rhody had split the first two meetings with the Minutemen (9-17, 2-4 A-10), 6-1 and 2-4.
It was Massachusetts that got on the board first, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third after cranking out back-to-back two-out singles.
Zach Fernandez then took over for starter
AJ Jones and ended the threat.
After being held scoreless for 11 innings dating back to Saturday's game, URI broke through in the bottom of the fourth with a three-spot that awarded the team the lead.
Eric Genther got the scoring started with a sac fly out to right field before
Scott Penney plated an additional two with a double to left.
A batter being hit by a pitch and a single allowed UMass to get the tying run on in the following frame. The Minutemen then utilized a double steal to get into scoring position and came in on an extra-base hit, knotting up the score at 3-3. Fernandez fired back in the following inning by retiring the side and taking the final visitor he faced down swinging.
Rhody had left a combined three runners on in the fifth and sixth but finally turned the tides in the seventh.
Reece Moroney drew a walk to lead off the frame and was joined on the base paths by
DJ Perron and
Anthony DePino, who worked two-out freebies of their own. Hindle then stepped up to the plate and roped a two-bagger out to left, boosting Rhody to a 5-3 edge.
Hughes worked around four total baserunners in the final two frames as Massachusetts continued to threaten. He later ended the game with a ground ball, sealing Rhode Island's first series win of the 2024 season.
