How it Happened
Rhode Island's postseason hopes took a hit with a 3-2 loss to Richmond in the opener of a three-game series Friday. The loss – coupled with a George Washington win over Massachusetts – dropped the Rams two games behind GW with five games to go for the seventh and final playoff spot at the Atlantic 10 Championship.

Richmond (22-27, 11-8 A-10) struck quickly, getting on the scoreboard just two batters into the game. Aaron Whitley and Phil Bernstein hit back-to-back doubles, with Whitley scoring on the latter. Bernstein figured on the second run as well, which came in the top of the third. He reached on an infield single and advanced on a throwing error. After a sacrifice bunt moved him to third, Bernstein scored on a sacrifice fly by DJ Pacheco to make the score 2-0.

After being held to one hit over the first three innings, the Rams (16-26, 8-11 Atlantic 10) got three hits in the bottom of the fourth. The first two hits were back-to-back solo home runs by Michael Anderson and Jack Hopko that tied the game at 2-2.

In the top of the sixth, the Spiders retook the lead. Whitley reached on a one-out single and moved to third when Bernstein reached on a two-base error. A Jordan Jaffe single brought Whitley in for a 3-2 lead.

Rhody got the potential tying run into scoring position in the bottom of the ninth. Anthony DePino drew a one-walk out and stole second. However, a soft lineout and a strikeout ended the contest.

Inside the Box Score
  • Sophomore Michael Anderson's home run was his 12th of the season. With 10 last year, he already ranks fifth in program history with 22 for his career. Addison Kopack (2021-23) had 22 as well.
  • Anderson also singled, as he had two of URI's six hits.
  • Junior Anthony DePino singled, walked and stole two bases.
  • Graduate students DJ Perron and Michael Borelli each had one single.
  • Sophomore Jeremy Urena gave Rhode Island a solid performance in his first start of the season. Over 5.0 innings of work he allowed just one earned run without walking a batter.
  • The relief work of Connor Grotyohann, Zach Fernandez and Kenny Heon was superb, keeping the Rams in the game. The trio combined for 4.0 scoreless innings on just one hit.
  • Fernandez pitched two of the innings. He also made a strong defensive play. With Richmond's Jack Arcamone on third, Fernandez fielded a bunt and in one motion flipped the ball with his gloved hand to catcher Rob Butler, who applied the tag to retire Arcamone.
  • The play helped Fernandez escape a first-and-third, nobody out jam without allowing a run.
  • Rhode Island left 10 runners on base and was a combined 0-6 with runners in scoring position.
