How it Happened
Rhode Island could not slow Richmond down, falling to the Spiders 21-2 Saturday afternoon.
Richmond (23-27, 12-8 A-10) scored twice in each of the first two innings, then truly broke the game open with a five-run rally in the fifth inning. By the time the Spiders scored five more times in the seventh, the game was well in hand. The visitors added seven more runs in the top of the ninth.
The Rams (16-27, 8-12 Atlantic 10) managed seven hits through the first eight innings, all of which were singles. URI's best scoring chance came in the bottom of the seventh.
Connor Grotyohann drew a leadoff walk, and with one down,
TJ Gormley and
Ryan Henschel delivered back-to-back singles to load the bases. However, two strikeouts ended the threat without any damage.
Rhody got a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth. Gormley walked, Henschel doubled and
Michael Borrelli was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two down,
Ryan King drove a ball through the left side to drive in Gormley and Henschel to avoid the shutout.
