How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball saved itself from being swept at home by Richmond with a XXX win on Sunday afternoon.Â
The victory closed out the Rams' (17-27, 9-12 A-10) home portion of the 2024 slate, with the team finishing 10-8.Â
URI took its first lead of the weekend early in the contest when
Jack Hopko belted a solo shot out to right field to start the second. Two frames later, he came in on a
DJ Perron double to put the team up 2-0.Â
Runs continued to come in for Rhody in the following inning, as
Ryan Henschel drove in
Michael Borrelli with a long single. Later,
Eric Genther got a sacrifice squeeze down to bring Henschel in and improve the lead to 4-0.Â
In his final game at Bill Beck Field, right-handed pitcher
Sean Sposato threw five scoreless innings while the Rams built their advantage. An RBI single in the sixth got the Spiders (23-28, 12-9 A-10) on the board and ended Sposato's day, as URI opted to bring
Kenny Heon in from the bullpen.Â
Heon was dinged with one run in the seventh before handing the ball off to
AJ Jones who faced faced the tying run at the plate but ultimately got out of the jam with Rhode Island still ahead at 4-2.Â
Tommy Hughes closed the game out for Rhody with two shutout innings, striking out four batters.
DJ Perron added an insurance run in the eighth with a home run that punctuated the victory.Â
