How it Happened
Rhode Island took the first game of a doubleheader on Thursday from Dayton, 8-6, and leads 11-10 in the second which was suspended due to darkness. The Rams (18-27, 10-12 Atlantic 10) entered the series at Woerner Field at AES Ohio Stadium with their season on the line, gunning for one of the seven spots available in the Atlantic 10 Championship.
Rhode Island 8, Dayton 6
Rhody hung a pair of crooked numbers in the second and third to go up 6-0 early and never looked back. Two hits from
Reece Moroney, a groundout from
Michael Borrelli, a sac fly from
Michael Anderson and a
DJ Perron home run helped boost the team to its initial edge.
Dayton (31-19, 13-8 A-10) made things interesting in the middle of the game, drilling a three-run homer and a solo shot to cut the lead down to 6-5. The Rams responded when
Connor Grotyohann's single drove in
Eric Genther and Moroney was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh to re-distance the team.
A wild pitch allowed an unearned run to come across for the Flyers in the eighth, trimming the advantage back down to two runs but reliever
Zach Fernandez ended the frame with a swinging strikeout.
Tommy Hughes was called out of the bullpen to close the game and got into hot water when the home team loaded up the bases but he recorded three-straight outs to end the threat and preserve the win.
Game Two - In Progress
