How it Happened
A go-ahead home run off the bat of Connor Grotyohann in the ninth and a dominant performance by Tommy Hughes out of the bullpen allowed Rhode Island to knock off Davidson, 8-6, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Rams (16-25, 8-10 A-10) took the overall set from the Wildcats having also earned a 19-3 triumph in Friday's doubleheader.

Rhody had to put together a rally late in the game to pull it off, beginning with an Anthony DePino single in the eighth that knotted the score up at 6-6. DePino advanced to second on Reece Moroney's sac bunt to get into scoring position but he was left stranded.

In the bottom of the frame, Hughes was called out of the bullpen and retired all three batters he faced to keep momentum on URI's side.

Though a pair of quick outs in the top of the ninth put the pressure on, Will Hindle reached as the go-ahead run when he cranked out a single to left field. Grotyohann then entered as a pinch-hitter in the following at-bat and took a ball deep to center field to put his team on top.

In Davidson's (19-27, 5-13 A-10) half of the inning, Hughes made quick work of the first two outs before plunking a batter to bring the tying run to the plate. The closer kept his cool, taking the final Wildcat he faced down swinging to preserve the victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • Graduate student Tommy Hughes picked up the win after throwing 2.0 scoreless innings of relief to improve to a perfect 4-0 on the season.
  • Sophomore Connor Grotyohann's home run was his third of the season and helped the Rams finish the day with 10 hits.
  • Juniors Eric Genther (2-for-3) and Anthony DePino (2-for-5), as well as freshman Reece Moroney (2-for-3), recorded multi-hit games.
  • Moroney and redshirt junior Rob Butler (1-for-4) scored two runs apiece.
  • Rhode Island's scoring was well-balanced, as six different players were credited with at least one RBI.
  • Sophomore Jeremy Urena allowed just one run while scattering four hits in 2.1 innings. He fanned three batters and did not issue any walks.
  • Freshman Joe Sabbath faced one batter in the bottom of the seventh and helped the Rams turn a crucial double play to end the frame. He kept a ball in the infield that may well have been a two-run single for the Wildcats.
  • Redshirt senior Sean Sposato struck out a season-high seven batters in his 4.0-inning start. He was charged with just three of the five runs that were scored under his watch.
