KINGSTON, R.I. - Rhode Island Women's Tennis had solid representation at the Minutewomen Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts, over the weekend.
The Rams competed against St. John's, Harvard and host UMass over the course of three days in both doubles and singles play.
Freshman
Katharina Spieth notched a pair of doubles wins with two separate partners to highlight that action for URI. She teamed up with sophomore
Blake Rothchild to defeat the Red Storm's Bizzart/Sartz-Lunde, 6-3, at No. 3 Doubles before beating Campino/Tye from Massachusetts, 6-1, with classmate
Grace Darcy at No. 2 Doubles.
The duo of junior
Nikki Fernando and freshman
Anastasia Pettersson accounted for Rhody's other doubles win, knocking off Babikova/Buss (St. John's) 6-3 on court one.
Spieth was also the only Ram to pick up two singles victories. She finished 2-1 at the top spot with a straight-set win over Babikova from St. Jonh's (6-2, 6-2) and another against Jonglertrakul from UMass (6-3, 6-1). Her lone loss was a three-set battle against Harvard's Karra (6-1, 2-6, 8-10).
Senior
Klara Nelander, Pettersson, Fernando and Rothchild also recorded singles victories.
Rhode Island head coach Jonas Brobeck...
"Overall, this was a great weekend for the Rams. We got a lot of quality matches against good opponents and everyone got better throughout the weekend. We need to continue to work on doubles and get more comfortable in some phases. When we play fundamentally sound doubles we will be tough to beat. Looking forward to some weeks of practice before ITA Regionals at Harvard."
