KETTERING, Ohio - Rhode Island had four of its five golfers finish the day at even par or better as the Rams held their own against a strong field on the first day of the Moraine Intercollegiate.
URI is 10-under par as a team and in seventh place through the first two rounds of the 15-team tournament. Midway through the second round, the Rams were in second place just three strokes off the lead. Rhody had its team score as low as 16-under par before fading a bit late.
"When we got it to 16 under and just three back, I really felt we were finding out who we were," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "But the next eight or nine holes saw us give six shots back and really struggle."
Missouri leads the team standings at 21-under par behind the play of Veikka Viskari and Bradley Mulder. The duo is first and second, respectively, in the 78-player field. Viskari is 8-under par, one stroke ahead of his teammate.
Behind the Tigers in the standings are Xavier (-19), Illinois (-15), Penn State (-15), Iowa (-14) and Ohio State (-12).
Rhode Island was led by
Luke Stennett, who shot 2-under in both rounds and is tied for 12th place on the individual leader board.
Tony Liu is one stroke behind him at minus-3.
Tyler Bruneau was 1-under par on the day, while
Aidan O'Donovan was even par after going 1-under in the second round.
"Tomorrow's round will go a long way in determining who we are," Burke said.
