GLEN COVE, N.Y. - Senior
Aidan O'Donovan navigated rough weather conditions to top the leader board after two rounds at the Nassau Intercollegiate Monday. O'Donovan is one of three Rams among the top seven in the 66-player field as URI build a six-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's final round.
O'Donovan is the lone player in the field who shot even par. He did so in both rounds, shooting a 70 in both rounds. He finished the day with seven birdies, carding four in the opening round and three more in the second round.
"Aidan was special today," Rhode Island head coach
Gregg Burke said. "He used all his experience to stick to his game plan no matter what and it paid off."
Luke Stennett is tied for fifth-place at four-over par, while
Tony Liu was one stroke behind him in a tie for seventh place.
Josiah Tong (plus-8) and
Tyler Bruneau (plus-14) rounded out Rhody's lineup.
"We played extremely well for a very long time this morning but when the wind came up, things changed for everyone," Burke said. "We had everything but a house landing on a witch out there with gusts up to 40 miles-per-hour.
"Patience and navigation were key. If you caught a gust when your putt was slowing down, it could be eight feet short or eight long."
Rhode Island is plus-17 as a team, six strokes ahead of Army. LIU (plus-27) is in third place, followed by the trio of Kansas City, Utah Valley and Fairfield, all at plus-29.
"We have three guys in the top seven which is why we are leading," Burke said. "The wind will be down tomorrow and we'll have targets on our back. Tomorrow is a day to play the golf course with no distractions."
