NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Rhode Island has five players among the top 16 in Wykagyl Collegiate field, helping URI to a three-stroke lead in the team standings heading into Tuesday's final round.

It was a two-team race through the first two rounds, as the Rams lead LIU by three strokes. Led by Josiah Tong (minus-4), Rhody is 13-under par as a team. LIU is minus-10. All other teams in the tournament are at least seven over par after the first day.

Tong finished the first day tied for fourth place. He had an exceptional opening round, shooting a three-under 69. Tyler Bruneau (T-6th, minus-3), Luke Stennett (T-9th, minus-1) and Tony Liu (T-9, minus-1) all are in the top 10 of the 60-player field. Aidan O'Donovan also turned in a solid day, landing in 16th at 1-over par heading into Tuesday.

As a team, seven of the 10 rounds turned in by the Rams were under par. Only two rounds for URI were over par.

Bruneau overcame three bogeys and a double-bogey in a six-hole span in Round Two. He also had six birdies to get himself to 1-under for the round. Liu had nine birdies on the day to finish 1-under. Stennett rebounded from a two-over par opening round to shoot a three-under par 69.

"For a team that made a ton of bogies on easy holes, we scored pretty well," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "Anything over par was not good, but we threw out the two we had.

"Josiah was terrific today and has put himself in position to win the tournament. But I could say the same for a lot of our guys. We are a talented team so we will make birdies tomorrow, but to be a great team we have to avoid bogies. That is more mental toughness and competitiveness than anything else."

On Tuesday, Rhode Island will be paired with LIU and St. John's as it looks to win its fourth team title of the Fall.
"Our singular job is to play the golf course," Burke said.
