NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.
- Josiah Tong sank a birdie on the 18th hole to help Rhode Island defeat LIU by one stroke to win the Wykagyl Collegiate Tuesday.

On a day the Rams struggled in general, some late heroics from Tong, Tony Liu and Aidan O'Donovan lifted URI to its fourth team title in six Fall events.

Liu was the lone Ram to finish the day under par. He birdied five of the final 11 holes and shot 71 for the day. He ended the tournament at two-under par to tie for seventh place overall.

O'Donovan delivered a birdie on hole 17 after a tough back nine. He was three-under par on the front nine, but then went eight-over in a six-hole span before coming up big on the 17th hole.

It was Tong making the biggest play of the day. After a string of four straight bogeys, he recovered to hit par on No. 17. Then, he carded a birdie on his final hole, which proved to be the difference in the team standings.

"Well, for the sixth time in six tournaments we were not in the lead at some point in the back nine. I'm all for comebacks but we created a lot of our own messes," Rhode Island head coach Gregg Burke said. "For the guys other than Tony, we were plus three, plus four, plus five, and plus seven on the back. Tony was two under. For us to be in contention at the Atlantic 10 Championship, we need a lot more focus and a lot more guts.

"But with that said, Aidan made a key birdie on 17 and Josiah went par-birdie to finish."

The Rams finished the Fall portion of their schedule winning four of six tournaments. They finished third of 15 and fourth out of 14 teams in the other two events.

"Of the 75 or so different teams we played this fall there were only four we didn't beat and three of those are ranked 82nd, 63rd, and seventh nationally," Burke said. "With fewer than nine holes left, we were ahead of the seventh-ranked team.

"We have a lot of things we need to work on to have a good spring so a four win fall season is something we'll be happy about in May or June."
