RHODE ISLAND VS. YALE - SERIES NOTES

  • Rhode Island and Yale are meeting for the 15th time.
  • Both sides have won seven times in the series.
  • This is the third straight season the teams are playing. Rhode Island won 84-78 last season and 76-72 the year before, with both games played at the Ryan Center.
  • Rhody is playing at Yale for the first time since Jan. 8, 2003, an 81-69 victory.
  • Yale is 6-3 when playing at the home team.
  • Rhode Island and Yale both competed at the Veteran's Classic earlier this month. The Rams fell to Tulsa, 82-65, while the Bulldogs defeated host Navy, 97-68.
  • The Bulldogs are averaging 93.3 points per game while shooting .534 from the field as a team.
  • They rank 20th nationally in field goal percentage, and third in 3-point field goal percentage (.508).
  • Both teams have been exceptional at the free throw line. Yale ranks seventh nationally at .829, while Rhode Island is ninth at .828.
  • Riley Fox and Nick Townsend are shooting .667 and .571 from the perimeter, respectively. Fox is 10-for-15 and Townsend is 8-for-14 from long range.

COCHRAN LEADING THE NATION IN STEALS

  • Tyler Cochran and Bowling Green's Javontae Campbell are tied for the national lead in total steals (19) and steals per game (4.75).
  • Cochran has at least three steals in each of the four games he has played this season.
  • He set a Rhode Island single-game program record with nine steals against Stonehill on Nov. 11.
  • He broke the previous mark of eight by Fatts Russell against Saint Louis on March 1, 2020.
  • Cochran needs just two more steals to reach 200 for his career and join Iowa State's Tamin Lipsey (250) as the only active Division I players with 200 career steals.
  • Seattle's Maleek Arrington (198), Dayton's Javon Bennett (193) and Vanderbilt's Duke Miles (192) all are closing in on 200 career steals at the start of the week.
  • Cochran has recorded 62 steals in a season twice, doing so at Ball State in 2021-22 and again at Toledo in 2023-24.
  • He was the MAC Defensive Player of the Year for Toledo in 2023-24.
  • In addition to his defensive work, Cochran leads the Rams in scoring (16.0 points/game) and rebounding (6.3 points/game).

KING MAKES AN IMPACT IN LIMITED MINUTES

  • Redshirt freshman guard Damone King had his biggest performance of the season in Friday's win over UAlbany.
  • King entered the first half with 8:20 remaining in the half and the Rams trailing 16-12.
  • He stayed on the court for the remainder of the half, sparking the Rams to a 26-14 run and an eight-point halftime lead.
  • At one point, King spearheaded an 8-0 run that gave the Rams their first and final lead of the night.
  • King hit a layup and had steals on three straight possessions.
  • Each of the steals led directly to points for Rhode Island, turning a tie game into a 30-22 lead for URI.
  • King is averaging 2.8 points and 1.3 steals per game while shooting .500 from the field.
