How it Happened
Rhode Island surged in the second half to come up with an 86-77 win at Yale in the first road game of the season. With the shooting of
Jonah Hinton and the defense of
Myles Corey leading the way, the Rams (4-1) grabbed a win in their first road game of the year.
Yale (3-1) was highly efficient on offense in the first half, shooting 53.8 percent (14-of-26) as a team. Isaac Celiscar, Samson Aletan, Trevor Mullin and Casey Simmons all scored eight points in the opening 20 minutes for the Bulldogs. Yale also took advantage of Rhody foul trouble, hitting 12-of-13 from the stripe.
Rhody stayed close by making six 3-pointers in the half.
Jonah Hinton had three,
Jahmere Tripp made two and
Alex Crawford hit one, allowing the Rams to be within 46-40 at the break.
Yale built its lead to as many as 10 points early in the second half, but Rhode Island stormed back. With the Rams down 50-43 after a
Jahmere Tripp 3-pointer,
Myles Corey made back-to-back layups to help Rhody get within five at 52-47.
The Bulldogs got their lead back to seven before Rhody took the game over.
Jonah Hinton fed
Keeyan Itejere for a fastbreak dunk plus the foul. He converted the three-point play before
Alex Crawford drained a 3-pointer and Hinton hit a step-back jumper to put Rhody in front, 57-56.
The score went back and forth before another Hinton 3-pointer made it 62-60 for URI with 11 minutes to go. After Yale responded with a basket to tie the score, Rhode Island scored seven unanswered points for a 71-64 lead. Yale made one last push to cut the deficit to 71-69, but the Rams would not be denied.
Tyler Cochran hit a 3-pointer off a
Myles Corey steal, then he made a pair of free throws. A Cochran steal led to a
Mouhamed Sow dunk, and Rhody had the game firmly in hand, leading 78-69 with 3:21 to go.
