How it Happened
No. 14/10 Rhode Island (8-2, 6-0 CAA Football) controlled the game from start to finish, defeating Elon 34-20 Saturday afternoon for its fourth straight victory.
Devin Farrell led an offense that scored 24 unanswered points in the first half. Rhody scored three touchdowns and got a 54-yard field goal from
Garth White in its first four possessions. The win - coupled with Monmouth's loss to New Hampshire - means Rhode Island is in control of its own destiny as the Rams chase a second straight CAA Football title.
If URI wins its final two games at Maine and home against Hampton, it will be the league champion, regardless of any other results around the league. Â
Elon (4-6, 2-4 CAA Football) got a 50-yard field goal from Luke Barnes on the first drive of the game. Rhode Island came right back with a 16-play, 97-yard drive that capped by a 10-yard touchdown run by Farrell. Later in the half, he connected with
Greg Gaines III for a 19-yard touchdown pass and
Aboraa Kwarteng on a 70-yard scoring strike as URI built a three-touchdown lead.
The Phoenix scored a touchdown on the final play of the first half. Then, late in the third quarter, DJ James-Hamilton returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown, making the score 27-17 with five minutes left in the third.
Rhode Island slowed that momentum with a 10-play, 65-yard touchdown drive. Quarterback
Alex McClelland scored on a 6-yard keeper to cap the drive and extend the lead back to 17 points. Elon added a late field goal, but the final result was never threatened.
