How it Happened
Rhode Island's bench came up huge, scoring a season-high 57 points to lift the Rams to an 85-77 victory over Northeastern Monday night.
After Northeastern opened the game with an 8-4 run, Rhode Island (9-4) responded with a 14-3 run of its own. The run featured a pair of Alex Crawford 3-pointers plus six points from Jonah Hinton as the Rams built an 18-11 lead. With foul trouble hurting multiple starters, Rhody got big efforts from reserves Damone King (9 points), Crawford (6 points, 5 rebounds), RJ Johnson (6 points, 2 assists), Drissa Traore (4 points, 4 rebounds) and Jalen Harper (3 points, 2 rebounds). The bench contributed 28 first-half points as URI steadily built a 48-39 lead by the break.
The Huskies (4-7) used a 7-0 spurt to get within four points 52-48 early in the second half, but Rhode Island came right back with a 7-0 run to extend the lead back to 11 points. However, the Huskies made 5-of-7 from the arc to start the half, getting the guests within three at 63-60.
Rhode Island again responded. Damone King hit a 3-pointer to start a 9-2 run that also included an RJ Johnson jumper, an Alex Crawford layup and two Jalen Harper free throws to get the lead back to 10 points. Again, Northeastern chipped away and got it to a one-possession game with 2:24 to go. Luca Soroa Schaller hit a layup to make the score 79-77.
Alex Crawford hit a layup on an inbounds pass from RJ Johnson with just three seconds on the shot clock. On the next Northeastern possession, Crawford came up with a steal. URI led 81-77 with 55 seconds to go. After an empty Rhody possession, Northeastern turned the ball over right away. URI ran the clock down to 22 seconds, and Jonah Hinton got a rebound of a Johnson miss, forcing the Huskies to start fouling. RJ Johnson was fouled with 14.9 seconds to go and made both ends of a one-and-one for an 83-77 lead. Johnson got the rebound on a Northeastern miss and was fouled again. He came through at the line again, pushing the lead to 85-77 to ice the game.
