How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball split a doubleheader at William & Mary to begin the 2025 season on Friday. The Rams took the season opener before falling to the Tribe in the second game, which was only played through seven innings.
Game One - Rhode Island 10, William & Mary 9
The Rams brought their bats in the first game, cranking out 17 hits in their one-run victory over the Tribe.
Rhody (1-1) scratched a pair of runs across in the opening two frames before delivering a four-spot in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead. A three-run homer from
Scott Penney, the first of his collegiate career, began the spree before
Reece Moroney's double drove in
Eric Genther.
The teams traded scores over the next four innings, which saw both sides utilize their respective bullpens. Up 10-9 in the top of the ninth, the Rams were 90 feet away from adding an insurance run but
Anthony DePino was left stranded on third.
Joe Sabbath then pitched around a pair of walks in the bottom half, recording all three outs on strikes to seal the win.
Game Two - William & Mary 5, Rhode Island 4 (7 inn.)
Leaving the bases loaded in the sixth came back to haunt URI in the second game of the day. Tied at 4-4, a double steal by
Ryan Henschel and DePino, who had reached on an error and a walk, put runners into scoring position before
Jack Hopko drew a walk of his own to juice the bases. For the Tribe (1-1), a flyout down the right field line ended the threat.
A leadoff single put the go-ahead run on in the bottom of the frame and though the next two batters were retired, a timely single drove the runner in to award William & Mary the lead.
Nicholas Toro came through with a two-out single of his own in the seventh to give the Rams hope, but they were unable to bring him in.
