How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball out-slugged William & Mary for a 36-22 victory on Sunday evening at Plumeri Park. The Rams cranked out 24 hits in the seven-inning game, scoring at least one run in all but the sixth.
URI (2-1) took the series with the result, having split a doubleheader with the Tribe on Friday afternoon.
The game was out of control from the start, with William & Mary (1-2) on top 14-6 after two innings. Over the next three frames, Rhode Island scored 26 runs with an astounding 17-spot in the fifth. Freshman
Adonis Medina, who entered as a pinch-hitter, homered twice in just that inning to put the Rams ahead, 32-14.
Rhody maintained its staggering lead from there, with both sides continuing to scratch runs across. A total of fifteen pitchers made appearances in the course of the four and a half hour game, which was littered with a combined seven errors.
It was the most runs scored in program history since at least the year 2000 and likely, ever.
Inside the Box Score
- Surprisingly, the Rams were not the only team to put up 36 runs on Sunday afternoon. Indiana State defeated Wagner 36-6 in a neutral site game.
- The 58 combined runs are tied for the fourth-most scored in a single game in NCAA Division I history. The record is 62 from a 33-29 Denver win over Air Force on May 13, 1968.
- The last time Rhode Island began a season with a series win was back in 2011. That year, the team took two games from McNeese State as part of a 31-22 campaign overall.
- Seniors Anthony DePino and Eric Genther each scored six times, setting a new program single-game record. The previous mark of five, originally set by Mike Chadwick in 1978, had been done seven total times.
- Graduate student DJ Perron's seven RBI are tied for the sixth-most in URI history.
- Six different players took William & Mary pitchers deep, with freshman Adonis Medina recording the only multi-home run game. DePino, Genther, Perron, redshirt senior Rob Butler and sophomore Scott Penney also left the yard.
- Of URI's 24 hits, half were for extra bases.
- Six different Rams had multi-hit games. Genther, Hopko and Butler recorded a team-high four apiece.
- Four different players had at least five RBI in Perron (seven), Hopko (six), Penney (five) and Butler (five).
- Freshman Parker Aikens (1-1) was awarded his first career win. He pitched one scoreless inning.
- Aikens and junior Connor Johnston (1.0 IP) were the only two Rhody arms to avoid giving up any earned runs. In total, the Rams used seven pitchers.
