How it Happened
The Rhode Island baseball team held on for a 12-11 win against No. 11 Oregon on Friday night at PK Park. Joe Sabbath pitched his way out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to reward the Rams (3-1) with the upset.

Though it came down to the final frame, URI had a chance to put the Ducks (3-2) away early, having led by as much as eight runs. While Oregon had the early advantage, up 2-1 through five innings, Rhody put up a seven-spot in the sixth inning to take its first lead of the night.

Rhode Island batted around in the frame, beginning the scoring spree when Eric Genther slapped a ball into right field to drive in Anthony DePino and simultaneously tie things up. Both DJ Perron and Adonis Medina then launched a pair of respective three-run homers to lift URI to an 8-2 lead.

Though the Ducks answered with a solo shot and an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth, Rhode Island carried its momentum into the following inning where a pair of timely singles from Perron and Rob Butler, as well as an RBI fielder's choice for Scott Penney, re-extended the advantage to 12-4.

Despite facing a large deficit, Oregon clawed its way back into contention over the final three frames by putting up seven unanswered runs. After a one-out RBI double cleared the bases and trimmed the difference down to just one run, Sabbath settled back in and eventually sealed the victory via a strikeout and fly-out.

Inside the Box Score
  • The Rhody offense has been on a tear to start the season, now averaging 15.5 runs per game. The Rams' 11 hits were close to a season-low, as the team had 17 and 24, respectively, in last weekend's games at William & Mary.
  • Rhode Island's last win over a ranked opponent was a 6-2 victory over No. 18 UConn back on March 26, 2022 at Bill Beck Field.
  • The last time URI defeated a top-25 team on the road was on March 1, 2020 when the Rams knocked off No. 25 Arizona, 15-11.
  • Graduate student DJ Perron was 2-for-4 with a team-best four RBI. He scored three runs and drew one walk.
  • Freshman Adonis Medina was 2-for-3 with three RBI and drew one walk. Three of his first four hits as a collegiate baseball player have been home runs.
  • Both sophomore Reece Moroney (2-for-4) and redshirt senior Rob Butler (2-for-4) also turned in multi-hit games. Butler additionally contributed a pair of RBI.
  • All but two of URI's starting position players had at least one hit.
  • Sophomore Joe Sabbath was awarded his second save in as many appearances this season, having picked one up last weekend at William & Mary. He gave up two runs in 1.2 innings and fanned two batters.
  • Junior Jeremy Urena was awarded the win, his first of the year. He pitched 5.1 innings and was tagged with four runs.
  • The Rams used a slew of relievers in the middle of the game, calling sophomore AJ Jones, sophomore Josh Kopetski and freshman Parker Aikens from the bullpen. Jones was charged with one run, while Kopetski and Aikens allowed two apiece.
