CAPTAIN'S CORNER: Representing Rhode Island

By David Green

When it comes to representing Rhode Island basketball, one of the most important things is being a hard worker who is giving it their best at all times. You want to give your teammates something they can judge you from, an example of how they can do things. Leading by example is important.

This is something that I have had to grow into. I've never been in this kind of leadership role in my college career until I got here. I've always been one of the guys who follows suit. It's something that I have had to get used to, but I feel like I have done a better job of it this year.

As members of the team, we are asked to represent the program in a variety of ways. For example, last week we all went to the Memorial Union for the program where President Parlange announced the top-tier researched designation (R1 status in the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Learning). It's an honor and something that you should cherish. They are asking you for a reason, and it's important to the program that you represent. That is something that I don't take for granted.

I feel like the recognition for the University – for the people who are here now and the people who have been here – it's a good thing. It's a sign that the work being done here is being recognized. It's nothing but good for everyone here.

My first year here, I didn't really leave my room much at all. Now that I have been up here for two years now, I am getting used to the scenery of Rhode Island. I've been more involved in the things that go on around here and get involved with the community a little bit more. That's something I have embraced.

Until next time,
DG
