Rhode Island Blanks Nichols 6-0 For Fourth Straight Win

NEWPORT, R.I. – It was a clean sweep for Rhode Island as the Rams defeated Nichols College 6-0 for its fourth straight victory Sunday evening.

Sophie Herrman helped URI (4-0) win two team points without giving up a game. She teamed with Klara Nelander on a 6-0 win at No. 3 doubles and then swept Antonia Carrero 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Herrman and Nelander are 4-0 together this Spring.

Anastasia Pettersson, Katharina Spieth and Nikki Fernando also won in both singles and doubles. Pettersson paired with Grace Darcy for a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles. Playing for the first time at No. 4 singles, Petterson recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win over Johanna Schroeder.

Spieth and Fernando won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Spieth then best Kamora Helton 6-3, 6-0 at the top singles spot for her 10th singles win of the year. Fernando dominated Pamela Gonzalez Vallardi 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Blake Rothchild saw her first action of the Spring and notched a 6-3, 6-3 win over Cora Brosch at No. 6 singles. Ava Grnja was comfortably ahead in her match at No. 5 singles, leading 6-4, 2-1 when the match was halted.

"Overall, it was a good weekend for the team," Rhode Island head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "We followed up a great, convincing win against Fairfield with a solid performance today. We did a great job of setting the tone on each court and following our game plan. The focus is now on preparation for a very solid Quinnipiac."

The Rams are back in action Saturday, Feb. 8 when they host Quinnipiac at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The match begins at 6:45 p.m.
