How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball dropped a 15-14 game to New Mexico on Saturday night at Santa Ana Star Field.
The Rams (4-5) scored the final two runs of the night thanks to
DJ Perron's two-run homer in the top of the eighth but were unable to surpass the Lobos for the win.
Rhody and New Mexico (6-5) exchanged leads throughout the course of the game. Both sides got the scoring going right away, putting up a combined seven runs in the first inning alone.
Though URI went on to find itself in as much as a 14-7 deficit, the team responded with a five-spot in the top of the seventh to cut the difference down to two runs. A
Reece Moroney sac fly got the scoring started before a pair of RBI singles and a run driven in by
Adonis Medina's fielder's choice put the Rams within striking distance at 12-14.
An RBI single for New Mexico re-extended the home team's lead by one before Perron's homer in the eighth. Though
Nic Notarangelo's triple later allowed the tying run to come to the plate, Rhody was unable to take advantage.
Inside the Box Score
- Graduate student Nic Notarangelo was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. He was a double short of the cycle, as he tripled, had a home run and singled twice.
- Graduate student DJ Perron tallied a team-best four RBI. He was 3-for-4 with two home runs.
- Senior Anthony DePino, senior Eric Genther, sophomore Reece Moroney and sophomore Scott Penney had two hits apiece.
- All but one of Rhode Island's nine hitters recorded at least one hit.
- Freshman Jake Cullen was charged with the loss (0-1). He allowed five runs in 1.2 innings pitched while fanning three batters.
- Sophomore Zach Morris (1.0 IP) was the only URI arm to avoid giving up any runs. He retired all three batters he faced in the eighth.
- Of the nine games Rhody has played in 2025, the team and its opposition have combined for 20+ runs in five of them.
- New Mexico had a narrow 17-16 advantage in hits.
- URI left six runners stranded throughout the course of the game.
