How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball was unable to recover from a five-run burst in the second inning by New Mexico, falling 8-4 in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The Rams (4-6) got into the hole early when an RBI single, an RBI triple and a pair of wild pitches put the home team up. Though the ballclubs traded a pair of runs in the third, with Anthony DePino's RBI groundout getting URI on the board, the Lobos (7-5) re-extended the advantage to 8-1 in the fourth on a two-run homer.

DePino continued to power the Rhody offense, taking two different New Mexico pitchers deep down the stretch to lift the Rams to their four-run total but it was not enough to negate the damage that the Lobos had done early on.

Inside the Box Score
  • Senior Anthony DePino was 2-for-3 with four RBI. Both of his hits were home runs and he also walked once.
  • Sophomore Reece Moroney was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate and worked one walk.
  • Freshman Adonis Medina finished the game 2-for-3 and scored twice.
  • Redshirt senior Rob Butler's lone hitt was a triple (1-for-3).
  • Graduate student Nic Notarangelo's single accounted for Rhody's ninth team hit.
  • Freshman Ryan Thompson made his first career start at first base.
  • Junior Connor Johnston was tagged with the loss, moving his season record to 0-2. He was charged with all five of the second inning's runs in his 1.1-inning start.

  • Kopetski allowed three runs and fanned one batter, while Asencio held the Lobos scoreless.
