NEW ORLEANS, La. – Rhode Island kept its winning ways going with a 4-0 win at New Orleans Thursday.
The Rams (10-2) made relatively quick work of the undermanned Privateers (3-6). After
Klara Nelander and
Sophie Herrman won at No. 3 doubles via forfeit, the freshman tandem of
Anastasia Pettersson and
Grace Darcy clinched the team point with a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.
Darcy and
Nikki Fernando quickly clinched the team win with victories at No. 4 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Rhody was automatically ahead 2-0 because Nelander won by forfeit at No. 6 singles. Darcy gave up just one game, beating Ananya Dhankhar 6-0, 6-1. Fernando – who moved into a tie with
Katharina Spieth for the team lead in singles wins with 15 – knocked off Nouray Khaled 6-2, 6-0.
Pettersson was in command at No. 5 singles 6-3, 3-1 when play was halted. Herrman was in a tight 6-5 battle at No. 2 singles when the match ended, as URI was getting strong play up and down the lineup.
"We played more proactive in doubles today and set the tone in singles from start to finish," Rhode Island head coach
Jonas Brobeck said. "We have another great opportunity to get quality outdoor tennis in against Nicholls State tomorrow."
Due to rain expected in the area Saturday, Rhode Island will play at Nicholls State Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. to conclude the Spring Break trip.
