Rams Beat Nicholls State to Complete Perfect Spring Trip

THIBODAUX, La. – Freshmen Grace Darcy and Anastasia Pettersson and sophomore Ava Grnja all won their singles matches in straight sets to lead Rhode Island to a 4-0 win at Nicholls State Friday.

Rhody (11-2) finished its Spring Break trip with a perfect 3-0 record as it gets ready for the start of Atlantic 10 competititon.

It started in doubles, as junior Nikki Fernando and freshman Katharina Spieth teamed up for a 6-4 win in the No. 1 slot. For Fernando, it was her 45th career doubles win, tying her with Kirsten Leikem and Tristany Leikem for the most among all players dating back to 2009. Rhody clinched the doubles point when Darcy and Pettersson won 7-5 for their team-leading 13th doubles win of the season.

Darcy, Pettersson and Grnja then proceeded to win in straight sets at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively.

"This was a good finish today to a fantastic trip," Rhode Island head coach Jonas Brobeck said. "It was windy conditions today, but everyone stayed tough mentally. We are happy with our progress in doubles and the intelligence and point construction in singles. Now it is time to rest and heal up to get ready for our first Atlantic 10 weekend."

Rhode Island begins conference play next weekend. The Rams play at George Washington on Saturday, March 22 and then at George Mason on Sunday, March 23.
