How it Happened
Rhode Island Baseball responded to its loss from the first game of a doubleheader against UMass with a decisive, 13-1 win on Friday evening.
After getting in the hole early in their prior 6-3 loss, the Rams put up 11 unanswered runs between the second and fifth innings to distance themselves from the Minutemen.
DJ Perron kicked off the scoring when he crossed home on a wild pitch, one of three players to do so in the spurt.
Ryan Thompson (double) and
Jack Hopko (home run) churned out extra base hits while
Eric Genther and
Reece Moroney delivered additional runs via singles.
Southpaw
Trystan Levesque pitched a quality start for URI, keeping Massachusetts quiet while his team built its lead. He scattered four hits and worked around three walks in his scoreless, 6.0 inning start. Eventually, the Rams went to their bullpen and an RBI double put UMass on the board in the seventh but it was the only run that the team was able to manufacture.
Though the contest was already out of reach, a sac fly off the bat of Hopko and another score on a wild pitch allowed two more Rhody runs to come in during the top of the ninth before
Dorsy Asencio retired all three batters he faced in the bottom half, sealing the margin.
